Navigating Care for Co‑Occurring Chronic Pain and Alcohol Use Disorder

This case-based discussion will explore the complex relationship between chronic pain and alcohol use disorder (AUD), highlighting how these conditions can interact and reinforce one another through factors such as analgesia, withdrawal, sleep disruption, negative affect, and functional impairment. Through the review of a clinical case, participants will examine key assessment considerations, including pain interference and liver health, while discussing practical strategies for identifying risks and treatment needs. The session will also focus on evidence-informed, integrated approaches to care that combine medications for AUD and psychosocial interventions to support safer and more effective outcomes for individuals experiencing both chronic pain and alcohol use disorder. This training is available for 1.25 NAADAC Credits.
